Council Notes - January 28th, 2014

Public Hearing. A Public Hearing was held for Bylaw 2138 to rezone two lots along 11th Avenue between 50th and 51st street from R-1B (Single Family Residential) to R-2 (Low Density Multi-Family Residential) to accommodate a duplex development. There were no submissions or objections at the hearing and Council gave 2nd and 3rd reading to the bylaw.

School Land Subdivision. Council gave approval for a subdivision of a portion of land north of the Parkland School. In order to protect the park trail the land will be divided into two sections with the south section being consolidated with the Parkland Composite High School.

Policing. Council accepted for information an invoice from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police “K” Division in the amount of $513,425.58 (GST Exempt) with respect to municipal policing costs for the period from October 1st to December 31st, 2013. The policing costs are already approved in the 2013 Budget.

AUMA Fees. Council accepted for information an invoice from the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association in the amount of $8,328.55 with respect to the 2014 membership fees for the Town of Edson. These costs are already approved in the 2014 Budget.

Bylaw Officer. Council has approved Darcy Sean Spencer as a Town of Edson Peace Officer. Spencer was also designated as an officer for the purposes of municipal inspections and enforcement under the Municipal Government Act and a weed inspector under the Provincial Weed Control Act.

Regional Airport Studies. Mayor Pasychny spoke about a recent meeting between officials for Edson, Hinton, Jasper, Yellowhead County, Jasper Tourism and MLA Robin Campbell. During the meeting there was talk of continuing to push for regional air service out of Edson. Mayor Pasychny noted the group has also received a letter of support from the Premier’s Office. As a result of the meeting there was a request for funding to determine if Edson would be able to obtain CATSA (Canadian Air Transport Security Authority) Security. Edson Council has voted in favor of the request, up to $15,000, if all members participate.

The next Council Meeting is scheduled for February 4th at 7:30pm in the Council Chambers of the Edson Civic Building.
