Council Notes - October 21st, 2014

Tour of Alberta Delegation. Representatives from the Tour of Alberta gave a presentation to Council on their international cycling event. They outlined the economic impact of hosting the event and are interested in having Edson as a start point for leg 3 of the race in 2015. The cost to the Town of Edson would be $100,000 but cost sharing options are being explored. An estimated 41 million international television viewers watched the race in 2013 and it had an estimated $24 million economic impact. Council will discuss the idea further and bring options back at a future meeting.

Remembrance Day Parade. Council has given permission for the Royal Canadian Legion Joe Wynne Branch #51 to hold a Remembrance Day parade on November 11th. The parade will start at 10:00 AM and go from the Town parking lot behind the Legion, down 50th Street to 4th Avenue, west on 4th Avenue to 51st Street, north on 51st Street past the cenotaph, and into the Legion parking lot.

Development Permit. Council has approved a development permit for a new commercial building (Dental Office) to be constructed in a Direct Control district at 5020 6th Avenue.

Community Services Board Appointment. Council has appointed Rita Hauk to a new term on the Edson and District Community Services Board. The term begins immediately and ends October 31st of 2017.

MDP and LUB Workshop. Council received for information an advertisement regarding the Municipal Development Plan and Land Use Bylaw Review Workshops being held October 22nd and 23rd at the Galloway Station Museum..

Chief Administrative Officer. With the pending retirement of current CAO Clarence Joly, Council has been actively seeking a suitable replacement for the position. Following an in-camera discussion a motion was made to present an offer to applicant Mike Derricott. The motion was passed in a recorded vote with Mayor Pasychny and Councillors Bevan, Chouinard, Strang and Wilkinson in favor and Councillor Boyce in opposition. Councillor Gomuwka was not in attendance.

The next Council Meeting is scheduled for October 28th at 1:00pm in the Council Chambers of the Edson Civic Building.
