February 21st, 2017 - The Hornbeck Trails were groomed on Feb. 18. They received a centimeter of snow that night. Tracks were set on most trails (excluding the White Rabbit and 15K) on the 20th. Conditions vary from good to poor, with icy places and spots of low snow cover. The back of the 15K, and the White Rabbit, are not recommended because of extremely icy places and significant bare spots.
The Mooseheart Loppet will be held at the Hornbeck Trails this Saturday, February 25th. Registration is in the warmup shelter, starting at 9 am. The Mass Start is at 11 am. Come out and ski in the Mooseheart Loppet! (Information: Ralph Rix, email@example.com, 780-723-5145)
The Hornbeck Cross-Country Ski Area is located 14 km northwest of Edson. Follow Highway 16 west from Edson approximately 5 km. Turn north on Rodeo Road (RR 180) and travel approximately 6 km to the Stop Sign at Grande Prairie Trail (Township Road 540). Turn left (West) at the Stop Sign and follow the signs to the ski area.
Hornbeck offers 37.4 km of groomed trails for novice and intermediate skiers. The staging area provides a warm-up shelter with wood stove, picnic tables, toilet facilities and a parking lot.
The ski trails are signed with distance markers so that you can choose the length of trail appropriate to your skill level. The trail signs will assist you in determining your location along the trails. Skiing on unmarked trails is not recommended. It is easy to become lost on undesignated trails.
Hornbeck is an area rich in forest birds, such as Grosbeaks, Waxwings, Ruffed and Spruce Grouse, Canada and Blue Jays, Great Horned Owls, and Downy, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers. Skiers may also occasionally see a moose, deer or elk.
Hornbeck Cross-Country Ski Area is managed and maintained co-operatively by the Muskeg Flyers Cross-Country Ski Club and the Alberta Forest Service. The Muskeg Flyers organize several fun events during the ski season, including a moonlight ski trip (when there's a full moon, of course.)
