December 14, 2017 - Well, conditions are not so good at the Hornbeck Trails, due to the recent warm, windy weather and lack of snow. Some of the trails were renovated/groomed today, and will be track set Friday or Saturday morning, depending on the weather. The longer trails have too many bare patches and low snow. Expect new tracks on the 1K, 2.5K, 3.75K, 5K and 7.5K trails this weekend. The skating pad was renovated/groomed on all trails except the 15K and White Rabbit. If you ski the 10K, take the hill cutoff – the hill (Hornbeck Hill) is icy and has bare patches. The White Rabbit and the 15K are very icy and not recommended.
The Hornbeck Cross-Country Ski Area is located 14 km northwest of Edson. Follow Highway 16 west from Edson approximately 5 km. Turn north on Rodeo Road (RR 180) and travel approximately 6 km to the Stop Sign at Grande Prairie Trail (Township Road 540). Turn left (West) at the Stop Sign and follow the signs to the ski area.
Hornbeck offers 37.4 km of groomed trails for novice and intermediate skiers. The staging area provides a warm-up shelter with wood stove, picnic tables, toilet facilities and a parking lot.
The ski trails are signed with distance markers so that you can choose the length of trail appropriate to your skill level. The trail signs will assist you in determining your location along the trails. Skiing on unmarked trails is not recommended. It is easy to become lost on undesignated trails.
Hornbeck is an area rich in forest birds, such as Grosbeaks, Waxwings, Ruffed and Spruce Grouse, Canada and Blue Jays, Great Horned Owls, and Downy, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers. Skiers may also occasionally see a moose, deer or elk.
Hornbeck Cross-Country Ski Area is managed and maintained co-operatively by the Muskeg Flyers Cross-Country Ski Club and the Alberta Forest Service. The Muskeg Flyers organize several fun events during the ski season, including a moonlight ski trip (when there's a full moon, of course.)
