Arts Alive Edson

April is Poetry Month - submit a poem

April is Poetry Month and the Arts Alive Festival in conjunction with the Town of Edson Community Services department are asking anyone from Edson and surrounding area to contribute a poem you have written.  Please make sure the poem is family-friendly. For more ideas and inspiration, please follow this link to the League of Canadian Poets website https://poets.ca/npm/ or at family friend poems at https://www.familyfriendpoems.com/. Email your entry to dianai@edson.ca or message us on Arts Alive Facebook messenger. You can type your entry, take a photo of it or we strongly encourage that you take a video of yourself reciting your poem. We will post at least one poem per day and there will be draws for prizes throughout the month!

RAP & Rhythm Workshops with Srvent

As part of Arts Alive Festival, kids are invited to join Edson’s own Spencer Richard (aka Srvent), who is an independent producer and rap artist, professional filmmaker, and occasional author, for a fun workshop exploring performance art, poetry, and what it means to be an independent artist today.

We are offering two classes – one for kids ages 6-12 (April 11) and another for teens ages 13-18 (April 13).  Cost will be $10 per person.  Snacks will be provided.  Each workshop will take place at the Galloway Station Museum from 3:45-5:30 PM.

We ask each participant to bring a poem (or rap) they have written for workshop purposes. It doesn’t have to rhyme.

POETRY

You will find poetry nowhere unless you bring some of it with you.

- Joseph Joubert

Don’t know where to start? Well, a poem can be about anything. Like an animal, an emotion, your favourite season or holiday, a dream, a pet, an imaginary world, a photograph, your room, a colour, a journey or vacation, a sound, your favourite retreat, an imaginary friend, your secret hiding place…wherever your pen takes you.

SHORT STORY

You can make anything by writing.           - C.S. Lewis

Short Story Challenge

Try to include the following items somewhere in your story:

  • an exotic animal (ex. capybara, rhinoceros, Howler Monkey, etc.)
  • a dessert (ex. Angel Food cake, gelato, rice pudding, etc.)
  • a part-time job (ex. babysitter, pizza delivery, dog walker, etc.)

PERSONAL NARRATIVE

Cut out all these exclamation points. An exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke.      - F. Scott Fitzgerald

Personal narrative is a story from your life or experiences, usually told in first person (I had wanted a dog for so long...). Like a fictional story, the personal narrative has a beginning, middle, and end. Descriptive language is used, and story elements like dialogue may also be used.
