Edson, Alberta, August 14th, 2019 – Council has reviewed the Multi-Use Facility Survey results. The results were presented at Council’s August 13th, 2019 meeting.
The survey was fielded to learn the thoughts of the tax paying community, specifically, regarding the tax implications of the project. In total 716 responses were gathered from the 3,106 postcards that were sent out. This represents a response rate of approximately 23%.
2019 Multi-Use Facility Survey Report
Council and administration have reviewed the data and noted that while the support was 47% for moving ahead based on the current information, a majority of respondents had also indicated that such a facility would benefit their family and the community as a whole. It was also noted a majority of the concern with the project (87%) was due to the cost to taxpayers.
Throughout the project, administration has been looking into ways to mitigate the tax impact. The initial cost estimates were based on the highest operational cost estimates and largest amount of capital having to be borrowed. With further review of actual operational costs of similar facilities, and by adjusting the capital funding plan, it’s expected that the original estimate will be reduced. Further details are expected to presented to Council in September.
The Town remains committed to continuing efforts to minimize the tax impact of the project, as well as pursuing federal and provincial grants/corporate sponsorship for the project.
