Council Notes - July 9th, 2019

Delegation. Council received a delegation from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.

Public Hearing. A Public Hearing was held for Bylaw 2232, amending Land Use Bylaw 2070. This bylaw would remove section 77, which sets site standards for Places of Worship. Administration felt the section was overly restrictive. No submissions were received, and no one attended to speak to the matter. Council then gave second and third reading to the bylaw.

Mayor for the Day. Youth Council representatives were on hand to speak about a potential Mayor for the Day contest. Youth will be able to submit their ideas for positive change in the Town of Edson to apply. Council agreed to implement the contest starting in 2020.

Request for Tax Refund. Council defeated a motion to grant a tax refund to a property owner after a construction date error was discovered in his assessment dating back to 2015. It was noted that the Municipal Government Act is very clear when it comes to matters relating to taxes and processes are in place to allow for residents to question and appeal assessments each year.

Assessment Review Board. Council has approved the appointments of Michelle Deschene as Designated Clerk, and Paul Butler as Designated Chair of the West Yellowhead Regional Assessment Review Board. Both appointments are for one-year terms and commence July 1st, 2019.

Milestones and Achievements Policy. Council has adopted Milestones and Achievements Policy L-D-6 as presented.  The policy outlines how to handle requests for recognition of special events, such as wedding anniversaries, grand openings, and milestone birthdays.

Next meetings - The next Committee of the Whole Meeting is scheduled for July 16th, 2019 at 5:00 pm. The next Council Meeting is scheduled for August 13th, 2019 at 5:00 pm in Council Chambers.
