Council Notes - June 11th, 2013
Hillendale Phase II Road Closure. Council has passed first reading of Bylaw 2133. This bylaw will close a portion of roadway on the south side of 18th Avenue in the new Hillendale Phase II plans. The width of the Avenue is enough to accommodate a 3 metre municipal reserve. With the registration of the new plan it became apparent that a municipal reserve with fencing would be required in that area. A Public Hearing has been set for July 16th, 2013 at 7:30 P.M. in Council Chambers.
Offer to Purchase. Council has accepted an Offer to Purchase from Oliver Beneke for a Utility Right of Way adjacent to his property at 51st Street and 8th Avenue. After careful review it was confirmed that no municipal utilities run through that lot, however, Atco Gas does have a low pressure gas line in that location. As the Town has no plans to use that land in the future, the offer was accepted with the condition that a Utility Right of Way be registered prior to the sale.
Sidewalk Jamboree Road Closures. Council has approved the following street closures for the annual Sidewalk Jamboree in August.
- 50th Street closure from 1st to 6th Avenues and 3rd Avenue closure from 49th Street to the alley behind Switzer’s Drug at 12:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 14th to 10:00 P.M. Saturday, August 17th.
- 5th Avenue closure from the alley between 49th Street and 50th Street to 51st Street from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Friday, August 16th to accommodate a Soap Box Derby.
- Town parking lot closure on 50th Street from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 16th to accommodate a home based market.
Transportation Operating Assistance Grant. In the past the Province had provided a $20,000 grant for this area, but that grant was eliminated a number of years ago. The Town of Edson has included $20,000 in its budget to maintain this grant to ensure groups that had relied on that money could continue to operate. As a result, S.C.O.P.E. will receive $6,500 and E.S.T.S will receive $13,500 of the allotted funds ensuring that the transportation needs of seniors and handicapped individuals in our community are met.
Policing. Council accepted for information an invoice from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police “K” Division in the amount of $505,727.51 (GST Exempt) with respect to municipal policing costs for the period from January 1st to March 31st, 2013. The policing costs are already approved in the 2013 Budget.
CS Board Appointment. Council has approved that Kristie Gomuwka be appointed to the Community Services Board for a partial term ending October 31st, 2015.
Candidate Information Sessions. Council accepted for information a memorandum outlining candidate information sessions for people interested in running in the upcoming municipal election. The sessions are being hosted by Alberta Municipal Affairs and the Society of Local Government Managers and more information can be found on our website at www.edson.ca or at www.albertaleaders.ca.
The next council meeting is scheduled for June 25th at 1:30pm in the Council Chambers of the Edson Civic Building
