Council Notes - March 3rd, 2020
Edson Council was joined at the table by “Mayor for the Day” contest winner Dylan Falardeau for the meeting. Dylan spent the entire day touring the community with Mayor Zahara, as well as attending the Youth Council Meeting and Regular Council Meeting to wrap up the day.
Delegation. Representatives from the Pembina Pipeline Corporation gave a presentation to Council to introduce their company, provide project updates for the region, and to discuss community investment and engagement plans.
Capital Projects Funding Adjustment. Due to an ongoing grant application, MSI (Municipal Sustainability Initiative) funded projects for 2019 will now be funded from reserves. This allows the Town to be compliant for the 2019 audit while awaiting the outcome of the grant application.
Tax Exemption. Approval was given to an application for a tax exemption for the Edson Tumblers Gymnastics Club. The exemption will be in effect for the 2020 tax year and is effective for a maximum of three consecutive tax years. The portion of building qualifies for the exemption based on the fact it’s held by a non-profit organization and used solely for community games, sports, athletics, or recreation for the benefit of the public.
Mattress Disposal Fees. Council has approved changes to the Fees, Rates, and Charges Bylaw to include a mattress disposal fee of $20 at the Edson Landfill. This will offset the extra fees put in place by the West Yellowhead Regional Waste Management Authority for mattress disposal at the Hinton facility, which is where Edson’s temporary transfer station is currently hauling to. Administration is also looking into the costs and opportunities to have the mattresses recycled rather than landfilled.
Next meetings - The next Committee of the Whole Meeting is scheduled for March 10th, 2020 at 7:00 pm in Council Chambers. The next Council Meeting is scheduled for March 17th, 2020 at 7:00 pm.
