Council Notes - May 15th, 2018
Recreation Complex. Council has directed administration to present a plan for a fall demolition of the Edson and District Recreation Complex, to Yellowhead County for their consideration. Following the RFP process, with only the Edson Golf Club submitting a bid, Council held discussions with the Golf Club, Curling Club, and Yellowhead County to discuss the future of the facility. As the Golf Club has no interest in utilizing/operating the facility beyond the 2018 golf season, administration is recommending the demolition of the facility this fall. This would allow the land and parking lot to be turned over to the Golf Club for their use and operations, without the financial burden of a future demolition.
Tiffin Booster Station Repairs. Administration has been directed to engage in the process of repairing the Tiffin Area Booster Station, with a budget amount of $350,000 to come from unrestricted surplus. This will bring water pressure back up to levels seen before the booster station leak issues.
Edson Aeros Ice Rentals. Council has agreed to offer a one-year, non-prime, ice rental rate of $75/hour to the Edson Aeros Junior Hockey team. The regular rate is $105/hour. In exchange, the Aeros would volunteer in the hockey and ice-user community. Administration will continue negotiations with the club.
Recycling Campaign. Council is joining the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association’s campaign to modernize the Province’s recycling regulatory framework. A letter to MLA Eric Rosendahl has also been drafted in support of the campaign.
Recycling Council of Alberta Conference. Council has approved the attendance of all Councillors for the Recycling Council of Alberta Conference on September 19th-21st in Banff. It was felt offering full attendance was appropriate as the Town of Edson looks at potential changes to our own recycling program.
Health and Safety Policies. A number of Health and Safety policies have been rescinded as they were found to be obsolete during a review of the Health and Safety Manual.
Meeting Schedule. Council’s summer meeting schedule has been set. Council will meet July 10th and August 14th for Committee of the Whole meetings and July 17th and August 21st for regular Council meetings. All other meetings in July and August have been cancelled.
