Demolition of Edson and District Recreation Complex

Edson, Alberta, November 13th, 2018 – At last week’s regular Town Council meeting, Administration recommended the successful bidder of the request for proposal (RFP) process to identify a contractor for demolition of the Edson and District Recreation Complex.

Visco Demolition Contractors Ltd. of Edmonton is the winning proponent. They achieved top marks for their submission and were deemed to be the contractor with the best overall value and lowest price. Their quote for the project was $339,500 for total hazardous material abatement, demolition, and removal of the Edson and District Recreation Complex. Visco Demolition Contractors Ltd. has just completed the Evergreen School project in Edson.

Town Council supported the recommendation and provided a $400,000-dollar budget to address any unexpected cost overruns. Town Council was pleased with the lower than anticipated cost. Initial estimates were in the $1-1.5 million dollar range. Town Council was also impressed with Visco's ability to divert and recycle up to 100% of the concrete and metal.

It is anticipated that the project will involve approximately 38 days for hazardous materials abatement, 17 days for structure demolition and 5 days for backfill and site clean-up. The project is expected to commence in the next few weeks and will be completed by March 31st, 2019.

The decision to move forward with this project is in keeping with Town Council's Strategic Vision of Building and Strengthening our Foundation and creating a Vibrant and Healthy Community. The demolition of the Edson and District Recreation Complex will allow for the consolidation of Town of Edson recreation activities and related resources in a new Edson Multi-Use Facility.

This new multi-use facility is in the early stages of planning in partnership with Yellowhead County. Stantec Architecture Ltd. of Edmonton has been awarded the RFP for the first phase of this new project. This will cover pre-design and site selection, geotechnical study in relation to the site, and conceptual design.
