Edson, Alberta, September 26th, 2018 – Members of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) have approved a resolution brought forward by Edson Town Council. The motion had 73.7% support and urges the Alberta Government to consider review and institution of an aviation fuel fee in order to attribute a portion of the cost of community airports directly to the user.
The current Community Airport Program provided $2 million in funding in 2018, split between 72 paved airports in the Province. Edson Mayor Kevin Zahara says this funding falls far short of the actual costs of funding a community airport, leaving municipalities with a considerable funding shortfall. He adds the funding is not secure as it’s determined in the Provincial budget each year.
The Edson delegation also seconded a motion to encourage the Provincial Government to develop an extended producer responsibility program to support the burden of recycling felt by municipalities.
Council has also taken the opportunity to sit down with the Minister of Transportation Ric McIvor at the AUMA Conference this week. Positive discussions were held regarding funding for the Waste Water Treatment Plant and the need for safer pedestrian crossings on our highway corridor.
The Ministerial Dialogue Session also proved to be extremely valuable as Council was able to highlight the issues of homelessness and the state of the Natural Gas Industry.
Council looks forward to continuing to work with the Province on these important issues for our community.
