Flag Lowering - Remains Discovered at Residential School

Posted on May 31st, 2021

Our flags in the Town of Edson will be lowered today in memory of the 215 innocent children who were found buried at a residential school site on the Tk'emlups te Secwepemc First Nation in British Columbia.

Edson joins other municipalities across the country in this recognition and offer our solidarity with Indigenous People across Canada.

Edson Mayor Kevin Zahara – “We offer our support to the families of these children and all others impacted by the atrocities of the Residential School system. The news is heartbreaking and we must all pause to think about the pain and suffering Indigenous children and their families endured.

Residential Schools are a black eye on Canada’s history and we must not turn our heads away from it but rather recognize this shameful history, understand it and ensure that it never ever happens again. The trauma of Residential Schools runs deep and will impact us for generations. This history is still very recent as the last Residential School closed in just 1996. “

We offer our deepest condolences and support to the families of these children and others who have been impacted by Residential Schools on Canada. #everychildmatters
