The Town of Edson is excited with the news that the Edson/Yellowhead County Recreational Multi-Use Project has been approved for $20 million in federal grant funding through Infrastructure Canada.

The announcement came today in releases from Infrastructure Canada, as well as Yellowhead MP Gerald Soroka. The news release confirmed grant funding for several important infrastructure projects across the region. The full release can be found on the Infrastructure Canada website.

The remaining $50 million of this proposed $70 million project will come from a combination of Provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) grant money and municipal funding (approx. $25 million Yellowhead County and County MSI grants / approx. $25 million Town of Edson and Edson MSI funding).

Edson CAO Mike Derricott says, for Edson, this new grant means relying less on future funding than the original proposal. “As we continue to move through uncertain times, having this guaranteed funding will allow the Town of Edson to move forward with more confidence and to use potential future grant money for other important infrastructure projects in the community.”

More details on the project, as well as Edson’s financial planning for this facility, can be found at www.edson.ca/facility.

It’s expected that a project management firm will be hired this year with more detailed designs coming in 2021. Additional details/project information will be released in the coming weeks.

The Town of Edson is looking forward to moving forward with this important project with our partners in Yellowhead County, and support from the Provincial and Federal Governments.
