Edson, Alberta, February 5th, 2018 – Due to health and safety concerns, the Edson and District Recreation Complex will be closed effective immediately.
Following an inspection of the facility by Occupational Health and Safety, certain areas of the Recreation Complex have been ordered closed due to the presence of asbestos. The asbestos was discovered in the ice plant and fire suppression rooms. Access to those rooms is now restricted until OH&S sends out asbestos experts to advise of what needs to be done to mitigate the situation. A stop order has also been placed on running the ice plant.
"Maintaining a healthy and safe environment for our workers and the public is our priority. With this discovery, the facility will remain closed until more information is known and a plan of action is put in place," said Town of Edson Chief Administrative Officer Mike Derricott.
Edson Mayor Kevin Zahara says it’s unfortunate, but a necessary shut down. “I know this will come as a disappointment to our curlers and other user groups, however, we look forward to getting more information and making a decision on how to best move forward.”
More information will be released as details on the full extent of the shutdown, and actions required, are available.
