As we move into the summer months and organics plays a larger factor in our waste reduction strategy, we'd like to take a moment to thank our residents for the incredible work being done!
2019 was a benchmark year for waste diversion as town residents continued to commit efforts to recycle materials and separating yard and kitchen organics for composting.
This falls in line with Council’s Strategic Plan under the ‘Vibrant & Healthy Community’ pillar. (Strategic Priorities Plan 2017-2021)
The combination of the Curbside Organics Collection Program and the Recycle Depot operated by the Edson & District Recycling Society have created significant results and successes for waste diversion.
These results and equivalents can be seen below and represent an impressive benchmark as the Town recognizes its role in supporting environmental stewardship:
57% diversion of total residential waste from landfill by weight*. This diversion offsets 1,871 tonnes of CO2 offset* which is equivalent to:
- Removing 400 passenger vehicles from the road for 1 year; OR
- Planting approximately 31,000 trees.
* estimated using available industry data (for annual trending purposes only)
