Lifeguard Courses at the Leisure Centre in 2024.

How to become a Lifeguard:

Step 1:

CPR-C (Adult/Child/Infant) - Must be Government Approved (we recommend skipping this step and taking Intermediate First Aid instead.)

https://www.alberta.ca/first-aid-training.aspx

Covers all aspects of CPR skills and theory for adult, child,
and infant casualties, including two-rescuer CPR skills.
CPR-C includes an introduction to the purpose of an AED
and how they are used.

Check out local businesses for CPR-C course dates: Edson & District Community Learning, Chlyn Safety, Rocky Mountain Medical Services, Safety Logic or Konect.

Step 2:

Lifesaving Bronze Medallion

Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally
and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the
four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze
Medallion training. Candidates acquire the assessment and
problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on,
and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for
assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.

Prerequisite(s): Bronze Star (need not be current) or
minimum of 13 years of age & current CPR-C or Intermediate First Aid.

Spring 2024 - Dates TBA

Alternatively check the www.lifesaving.org for courses being offered around Alberta.

Step 3:

Intermediate First Aid - Must be Government Approved

Intermediate First Aid provides comprehensive training
covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. This course
is for those who want an in-depth understanding of
first aid such as: medical/legal aspects, spinal injuries,
heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal
and chest injuries, burns, and medical emergencies.
Includes CPR-C certification.
Participants in workplace first aid programs are
required to achieve 70% or higher on a written exam
to receive certification.
Lifesaving Intermediate First Aid is Government of Alberta
and Government of Northwest Territories workplace
approved.

Check out local businesses for Intermediate First Aid course dates: Edson & District Community Learning, Chlyn Safety, Rocky Mountain Medical Services, Safety Logic or Konect.

Step 4:

Bronze Cross

Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to
lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities
as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand
their lifesaving skills and begin to apply the principles
and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities.
Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and
communication in preventing and responding to aquatic
emergencies. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for advanced
training in the Society’s National Lifeguard and leadership
certification programs.

Prerequisite(s): Bronze Medallion (need not be current),
current Alberta workplace approved Intermediate First Aid.

Spring 2024 - Dates TBA
