FAQ
- Why does the assessor need access to my property?
Allowing access helps ensure your property is assessed based on its actual condition and features. This supports a fair and accurate tax rate—so you’re not overpaying or under-assessed compared to similar properties. - Is this required?
Yes. Municipalities are responsible for maintaining up-to-date property records. While access is not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged because it’s in your best interest to have your property assessed accurately. - What happens during the visit?
The assessor may inspect the exterior and, with your permission, the interior of the property. These visits are brief, respectful, and focused solely on gathering information for assessment purposes. - Do I have to be home?
Interior access requires your consent and presence. Exterior inspections can often be completed without you being home. If needed, you can contact the assessor to arrange a convenient time. - How is my information used?
All information collected is used strictly for property assessment and taxation purposes. It is handled in accordance with privacy legislation. - Who can I contact with questions?
