Redistricting of Land Parcel. First reading was given to Bylaw 2328 to redistrict a portion of a parcel north of Highway 16 and east of 75 Street from Rural Residential to Highway Commercial (C) and Public Service (PS). A Public Hearing will be held during a Special Council Meeting on September 9, 2025, at 6:00 PM in Council Chambers.
2024 Audited Consolidated Financial Statements. Council has approved the 2024 Audited Consolidated Financial Statements as presented. The MNP, LLP Chartered Professional Accountants gave a clean audit opinion to the financial statements and they will be posted to www.edson.ca/budget this week. Council also accepted the Historical Financial Data 2020-2024 report as information.
Designated Assessor. Council has appointed Aaron Steblyk of Compass Assessment Consultants Inc. as the Town of Edson’s Assessor, effective October 3, 2023, expiring June 30, 2026.
Budget Engagement. Council was presented with the findings of the 2026 Budget and Citizen Satisfaction Engagement, conducted this spring. 228 participants responded to the online survey and 43 residents participated in the open houses and focus group sessions. The full report can be found at www.edson.ca/engage. Council has accepted the report as information.
Municipal Policing Service Financial Plan. Council has authorized the execution of the Edson RCMP Multi-Year Financial Plan 2026-2031. This plan provides a five-year cost projection to support budgeting and foster a collaborative approach to managing the Town’s financial obligations for contracted policing services.
Santa Claus Parade Funding Request. Council has approved the allocation of $5,000.00 from the Council General Reserve to support the recruitment and engagement of a non-profit organization to plan and organize the 2025 Santa Claus Parade. Historically, the parade has been organized by the Edson & District Chamber of Commerce, but in recent years they have stepped back from coordinating the event. Last year, the parade was organized by the Edson Friendship Centre, but they have also indicated they will no longer be able to continue in that capacity. It’s hoped this funding will help recruit another organization to step up and take on the organization of the event.
Rail Safety Week Proclamation. September 15-21, 2025, has been proclaimed as Rail Safety Week in the Town of Edson. In Canada in 2024, 261 railway crossing and trespassing incidents occurred, resulting in 68 avoidable fatalities and 58 serious injuries. To promote safety, CN and other stakeholders will be issuing rail safety messaging throughout Rail Safety Week.
Motions Arising Out of Closed Session. The following motion was approved by Council following the closed session.
- That Council direct Administration to proceed on the Land Matter as discussed in closed session.
Next meetings—The next Town Council Meeting is scheduled for September 2, 2025, at 7:00 PM in Council Chambers. A Special Council Meeting will be held on September 9, 2025, at 6:00 PM in Council Chambers, followed by a Committee of the Whole Meeting at 7:00 PM.
