Property Tax Exemptions. Upon application, exemptions for municipal taxation can be granted for properties that meet certain criteria. Some examples include seniors’ housing, charitable purposes, libraries, education, and religious worship. After review, Council has granted exemption status to the Edson Golf Club and the Edson Friendship Centre for a period of 3 years.
Grant Applications. Administration has received Council’s endorsement to apply for the Small Community Opportunity Program Grant and the Northern and Regional Economic Development Grant. If successful, the grants will be used to help fund some downtown revitalization projects, as well as a community ambassadors’ program with a series of micro events in 2024. These events will aim to generate positive engagement, attraction to the community, and leadership development.
Extended Producer Responsibility. Anne Auriat and Jonah Kuzmic of the Edson and District Recycling Society presented on the Extended Producer Responsibility Program. This program ensures a producer’s responsibility for a product is extended to the post-consumer stage of the products lifecycle and would transfer some costs and liability for residential recycling to producers. Council has accepted the report for information and directed Administration to pre-register with the Alberta Recycling Management Authority as a Community under the Extended Producer Recycling Program.
Graduation Ceremonies. Council has directed Administration to waive the fees of the Centennial Arena for the 2023 Holy Redeemer High School graduation ceremonies.
Extreme Cold Weather Emergency Cover Protocol. Council expressed concerns with the protocol as presented, specifically with the location, proposed time limits, and staffing of the temporary facility. Administration was directed to continue to work on the protocol and bring back alternatives to a Special Council meeting to be held on December 12th, 2023, at 8:00 pm in Council Chambers.
Auditor Appointment. JDP Wasserman LLP has been appointed as the Town’s external Auditor for 2023, 2024, and 2025.
RCMP Report. Council has accepted 3 items related to the RCMP Q2 report as information. The 2023 Q2 Community Letter, Q2 Edson Community Report, and the Edson Municipal Crime Statistics.
Next meetings – A Committee of the Whole Meeting is scheduled for December 12th, 2023, at 7:00 pm. A Special Council Meeting is also scheduled for December 12th, 2023, at 8:00 pm in Council Chambers.
