Council Notes - June 17, 2025
Land Use Bylaw Amendments – Public Hearing Held. A public hearing was held for proposed amendments to Land Use Bylaw No. 2296. Draft Bylaw No. 2326 focuses on administrative changes to correct errors, clarify definitions, and improve consistency. It also includes amendments to fencing regulations and the addition of “government services” as a discretionary use in the Public Service District. No written submissions were received, and no residents, external stakeholders attended or spoke at the Public Hearing.
Lions Club Delegation. Representatives from the Edson Lions Club presented an update to Council and requested an increase in the operating grant for the Edson Lions Park Campground.
Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw Passed. All three readings of Bylaw No. 2313 were passed. This updated Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw aims to enhance clarity, improve enforcement, and better reflect community expectations regarding pet ownership in Edson. The most significant change is that cats are now required to have a licence within the Town of Edson. The bylaw also shifts the focus of responsibility onto pet owners, rather than the Town, for ensuring animals are controlled and cared for appropriately.
Recycling Society Agreement Approved. A new service agreement between the Town of Edson and the Edson and District Recycling Society was approved, reaffirming the partnership that supports local recycling operations.
Snow and Ice Control Update Received. The 2024–2025 Snow and Ice Control Report was accepted as information. The report outlines preparations and expectations for the upcoming winter season. It was noted that temperature fluctuations during the 2024–2025 season created unique challenges, particularly with ice buildup along sidewalks on the Highway 16 corridor.
Community Grant Funding Approved. Thirteen applications were received during the May 2025 intake of the Community Grant Program. Applications requesting more than $2,500 were brought forward for Council consideration. Based on Administration’s recommendations, $15,760 in total funding was approved for the following organisations:
- Edson Dance Academy – Yoga, Barre, and Aerial Arts Division: $3,760
- Edson Food Bank Society: $5,000
- Association Supporting Choices of People, Edson: $7,000

The Town of Edson is currently recruiting members to sit on the board.
Business Security Rebate Program Pilot Expanded. To support local businesses, Phase 1 of the Business Security Rebate Program Pilot was approved, along with an expansion of the eligible area to include 1st to 6th Avenue between 48th Street and 52nd Street. The program budget has been increased from $10,000 to $15,000, with the additional funds drawn from the Council General Reserve.
