Council Notes - September 19th, 2023

Municipal Internship Program. Council approval has been given for the Town of Edson to apply for an Administrative Intern through the Alberta Community Partnership (ACP) – Municipal Internship Program. Host municipalities receive a grant to help offset costs of the 18-month program.

FireSmart Grant Application. Authorization was granted for Administraiton to apply for the 2023 Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) FireSmart Vegetation Management Grant. All forested areas owned by the Town of Edson have now had FireSmarting completed, however, some areas require more vegetation control following years of growth and fallen trees. The reduction of dead and overgrown fuels significantly reduces the wildfire threat.

Pivotal Project Update. Administration presented Council with an update regarding the Pivotal Energy Project. Following numerous meetings with area landowners, Pivotal was able to negotiate acceptable commitments and have received their Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) licenses. The company has until September 30th, 2023, to provide temporary emergency access plans to the satisfaction of the Town. Conditional approval has been given for the development of the processing facility with fire suppression and buffer zone plans approved and in place. There is also some clarification required on responsibility for potential intersection improvements at 54th Street and 2nd Avenue as per a Traffic Impact Assessment submitted by Pivotal. Those discussions are ongoing.

Survivors’ Flag Raising. Council has authorized the raising of the Survivors’ Flag when deemed appropriate in consultation with the Edson Friendship Centre to honour important dates significant to the Indigenous people in our community. The flag was raised today, September 20th, 2023, and will be flown until the end of September.

Transportation Study. The Transportation Study Report has been accepted as information by Council. The study was funded through a grant from the Rural Transit Solutions Fund and focuses on transportation related to pedestrian, cycling, and public transportation. The full report can be viewed at www.edson.ca/engage.

Director of Emergency Management. Fire Chief Brad Milton has been appointed as the Interim Director of Emergency Management.

Sponsorship Proposals. Council directed Administration to move forward with Sponsorship Proposals as discussed in the closed session.
