Council Notes - September 6th, 2022

Delegations. Melissa Weeteringen and Liane Richardson gave a brief presentation to Council regarding recent flooding concerns in the Tiffin area. The residents are seeking information about the Town’s plan to address the situation along with a request for funding for new back-flow prevention valves both of which Council has referred to Administration.

Automated Traffic Enforcement Update. Council received a report on the history of the Automated Traffic Enforcement Program (ATE), the philosophy, some public safety projects the program has funded, as well as changes to the ATE Guidelines. ATE in Edson is a tool to help reduce traffic speeds within the Town. All revenues generated are used to offset policing costs (RCMP contract), with $100,000 diverted each year to the Public Safety Initiative Program to enhance safety within the community. This includes projects like speed advisory signs, 72-hour emergency kits, and pedestrian crosswalk lights. The new ATE Guidelines are in full effect December 1st, including new ATE vehicle signage requirements. For more information on the Town of Edson’s program, visit, www.edson.ca/photo-enforcement.

Rail Safety Week. The week of September 19-25th has been proclaimed as Rail Safety Week in the Town of Edson.  According to CN, more than 2100 North Americans are killed or seriously injured each year because of unsafe behaviour around tracks and trains. The Town of Edson and other industry partners will be promoting safety around trains and railways throughout Rail Safety Week.

Rural Renewal Stream Program. Council has approved an endorsement letter for the Town of Edson to become a designated community under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program Rural Renewal Stream. The Rural Renewal Stream is designed to empower rural communities, employers, and settlement-providing organizations to recruit and retain foreign nationals to live, work, and settle in their communities.

2022 Public Auction for Property Tax Recovery Date. Approval was given to set the public auction date for recovery of unpaid property taxes for November 16th, 2022.
