Extreme Cold Emergency Warming Centre Protocol. Council has accepted the Extreme Cold Emergency Warming Centre Protocol as presented. This is meant to be an emergency warming centre only and is not designed for lodging. It would only be active from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am on nights when the temperature is expected to fall below -25C, including windchill.
The new location for the warming centre will be located at 54th Street and 1st Avenue, between the RCMP Building and the Provincial Building. This site was selected as it is Town owned land, close to the RCMP detachment, a highly visible location, and close to support services. The fully fenced centre includes two trailers, portable washroom facilities, and a generator with lighting.
Council approved up to $55,000 for the warming centre for the remainder of this winter season. This will be funded by money that was previously set aside for the Shelter Pod project, but returned, as it was not required.
