Pride Celebration

Posted on

Edson, Alberta, June 26, 2023 – A special event was held today in Edson to help celebrate the uniqueness and diversity of our residents.

In recognition of June Pride month, Parkland GSA students held a BBQ and painted a mural at Kinsmen Park today.

“The Town of Edson is proud to support this initiative and to allow the students to express their support for inclusivity of all residents regardless of how they identify. One of Council’s key pillars in our Strategic Plan is creating a connected community that is safe and inclusive. We want everyone to know you are welcome in this community.”

-Edson Mayor Kevin Zahara

This Pride event marks a significant milestone in Edson history to promote equal rights for all people, regardless of sexuality or gender identity and was supported by the Town of Edson, FCSS, RCMP, University of Alberta, local business owners and more.

“The Pride Progress Flag was chosen for the mural as it is the symbol of the LGBTQIA+ community and by displaying the flag, we hope to convey the message that wherever you are or how you identify, you are included, welcome and safe. It's a visual reminder of the struggles and oppression that people in the community have faced and continue to face, but it is also a sign of hope for how far we have come. Be Free to Be You. “

- Yvonne Lorne, Family School Liaison Counsellor

The Town of Edson is proud to support our youth in this endeavour and promote inclusivity for all residents.
