Healthcare Hero Awards Presented. In honour of Rural Healthcare Week next week (May 26-30,2025), the inaugural Edson & District Healthcare Hero Awards were presented to recognize outstanding contributions from local medical professionals. Launched by the Community Care Foundation Attraction and Retention Committee, the awards saw 66 nominations and celebrated individuals across five categories.This year’s recipients were:
- Nursing – Renee Kocur
- Healthcare Aid – Belinda Cackette
- Physician – Dr. Rudi Gous
- Other Professionals – Marilyn Oishi
- At Large – Mike Tomiak
Edson Housing Strategy Adopted. The 2025 Edson Housing Strategy was accepted, setting a path forward to address local housing challenges and future growth.
Support for Regional Tuition Assistance Pilot. Council endorsed participation in the Regional Tuition Assistance Bursary Pilot Program to help support access to post-secondary education for Edson residents.
Seniors’ Week Proclaimed. The week of June 2–8, 2025, has been officially proclaimed Seniors’ Week in the Town of Edson, recognizing the contributions of older adults in the community.
FCSS Grants Support Local Organizations. Each year, Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) funding is allocated to groups that enhance the well-being of Edson residents. Based on recommendations from the FCSS Advisory Board, a total of $22,300 was approved for the following organizations:
- Yellowhead Emergency Shelter for Women Society – $5,200
- Hinton Adult Learning Society: FASD Edson – $3,500
- Community Engagement Action Team Society (CEAT) – $500
- Edson and District Community Learning Society (Settlement Services) – $1,600
- Lions Clubs of Edson – $1,500
- Edson United Church – $3,750
- Edson Food Bank Society – $6,250
Q1 Financials Received. Council accepted the 2025 First Quarter Financial Report, summarizing financial performance up to March 31.
Backflow and Sump Pump Program Reimbursements Approved. Full reimbursement was approved for eligible backflow prevention and sump pump installations at 4 properties on 14th Avenue, including previously completed installations.
YCE Multiplex Budget Adjusted to Maintain Project Scope. To maintain the full scope of the YCE Multiplex Project, the overall budget has been increased from $80.24 million to $86.77 million. The updated budget does not expand the project but ensures all planned elements remain intact. These include a new pool and arena, renovations to the existing Centennial Arena, repurposing of the Memorial Arena into a curling facility, and the addition of a gymnasium and an elevated walking track. The Town’s increased contribution totals $3.265 million, with $645,616 coming from the YCE Multiplex Capital Reserve and $2,525,940 funded through the Local Government Fiscal Framework grant.
RCMP Q4 2024 Report Received. Council received the RCMP’s fourth quarter report for 2024, which included community policing updates and local crime statistics.
Bill 50 Letter Acknowledged. A letter from the Minister of Municipal Affairs regarding Bill 50: the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act was accepted as information.
Next meetings—The next Town Council Meeting is scheduled for June 3, 2025, at 7:00 PM in Council Chambers. The next Committee of the Whole Meeting is scheduled for June 10, 2025, at 7:00 PM in Council Chambers.
